What Does Your Child Learn in Preschool?

Is your little one heading to preschool? What are they going to learn there? As a parent, you might be curious about what your child can expect to learn in their time at preschool.
  • Basic Shapes: Preschool exists to give your child a foundation for kindergarten and other stages of education: basic shapes give them a foundation for later geometry learning!
  • Numbers, Counting, and Pre-Math Skills: Preschool is the time for developing foundations: in preschool, they'll pick up the foundations of math! They'll learn from numbers from one to ten, counting up to ten (or twenty), and the concept of numbers corresponding to objects.
  • The Alphabet: In preschool, we go beyond just the ABC song. Your preschooler will start learning that letters correspond with sounds and that they go together to make words. These skills help with reading skills down the line!
  • Colors: Learning to name and properly identify colors helps children with creativity and language development skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: These are the years that your child is fine tuning his or her finger strength and pincer grip. We help develop these critical fine motor skills through sensory play and arts and crafts.
  • Gross Motor Skills: Our preschool program includes plenty of active play time and movement in order to develop your child's coordination and gross motor skills.
  • Imaginative and Cooperative Play: Our play-based approach helps your preschooler build imagination, hone social skills, develop his or her sense of self, and practice problem solving. This is an extremely important stage in early childhood development.
  • Social Skills: Through cooperative play, your child will practice valuable social skills by interacting with their classmates and our teachers.
  • Independence: For many kids, their time in preschool will be their first significant time away from their parents. This is a great chance for them to build independence and confidence.

Getting Your Child Ready for Preschool

As parents, we want our children to be ready for anything. If it's time to enroll your child in preschool, you're probably wondering how to prepare them for the new experiences ahead. Most children start out at preschool on a similar page, developmentally speaking; in fact, preschool is one of the first and best environments to begin honing important academic, social and emotional skills that will serve your child well for the rest of his or her life. But that doesn't mean that there's nothing to be done! There are plenty of ways to begin preparing your child before the school year starts:
  • Potty Training - Although we are well-equipped to help wash up or handle any accidents that may occur, it's recommended that your child be toilet trained before beginning preschool.
  • Organization - Does your child know how to clean up after a play session?
  • Independence - If your child can engage in unsupervised play for longer stretches of time, it's a good indicator of their developmental progress. Kids who can feed themselves and find their way around the classroom without constant redirection are well on their way to success in preschool.
  • Social Skills - Children who are ready for preschool are able to play well with other kids and process their emotions in a relatively constructive way. They are also able to say goodbye to their parents every morning without too much anxiety. If your child is eager to go to school and make new friends, it's a sign that they are ready for preschool.
  • Stamina - Make sure that your child is used to following a routine and being actively engaged for longer periods of time. If he or she is still taking multiple long naps in a day, it might be a sign that they're not ready for the physical demands of preschool yet. Try merging their morning and afternoon naps into one longer afternoon nap to "test the waters" and begin preparing your child for preschool.
Do not worry too much about any of these steps - almost every child is still working on some - or all - aspects of readiness when entering preschool. The best place to prepare for preschool is by attending preschool. Start laying the groundwork and you'll see success! As always, you are welcome to call our facility to learn more about what we expect from new preschoolers before you enroll your child.
